Ted Rodes Obituary

Ted Rodes of Jackson, NH died at his home October 2nd after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born in Winthrop, MA on September 25, 1937, the son of Theodore Rodes and Helen Rodes. He was the oldest of six children. Ted was a graduate of Winthrop High School and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Teddy had a life-long love of the sea. As a career officer in the Merchant Marine, he traveled the world many times over until his retirement as captain in 2002. Ted's engaging personality was evident in the captivating stories he shared of his varied life experiences. They were told with his unique sense of style and humor and were widely appreciated by any audience.
During his time away from the ocean he lived in Provincetown, MA where he met his wife, Marilyn Mervar. In Provincetown he owned and operated Strawberry Fields, a successful produce business.
Winter breaks found Ted, an accomplished skier and hiker in the mountains of Vermont. In the early 80's he and Marilyn began to spend their winters in the Mt. Washington Valley area, eventually settling in Jackson.
Ted took pride working on his homes in New Hampshire and on the Cape. He loved the companionship of his Labrador Retrievers and was an avid follower of Boston's sports teams. But, most important to Ted were his valued friendships which were a source of strength for him this past year. His courage was an inspiration to all those who loved him.
Teddy is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and his dog Little Joe. He is also survived by his sister, three brothers and nieces and nephews.
