Ronald Hill Obituary

On April 23, 2010 Ronald G. Hill passed away at his home in Intervale at the age of 74. Ron was born in Gray, Me on June 26, 1935 to Francis and Lois Hill. Soon after, they moved to the Conway area where Francis (Fran) opened the IGA store in North Conway.

Ron attended area schools where he excelled in sports, played the trombone in the school band under Charlie Zumstein and in his free time enjoyed riding his horse Cimmeron along the logging trails behind their home.

After high school, Ron married Arlene Sanphy. They made their home on Pollard Street in Conway and began their family. At this time, Ron freelanced for the Laconia Evening Citizen and worked part-time as an announcer for WJWG, the radio station in Conway at the time.

Before long he joined the family business as proprietor of the Conway IGA. Years later they closed the small store in town and built the IGA Foodliner on Rt. 16 in Conway.

Ron loved working with the public and took pride in his accomplishments with the family business. He was known to stay open beyond closing hours to accommodate local shoppers after a last minute item or the out-of-towners here on vacation.

Ron loved the mountains, lakes and rivers of this valley and instilled in his children a similar reverence for nature. Early on, he often took his four children fishing on local ponds and was kept busy running from one pole to the other taking off fish, re-baiting the hook and responding to the next cry of "I've got one too, Dad!"

He was an avid outdoorsman and took great pride in sharing his expertise at hunting with his sons. There was always venison in the freezer for the winter much to the chagrin of his daughters. Ron liked to steal away on a warm summer evening to relax fly-fishing on the Saco. He was also a member of the North Conway Country Club for many years.

In the 80's, Ron sold his share of the family business to his brother, Barry and moved to South Royalton
