Richard Jones Obituary


Richard "Dick" H. Jones, Jr. 84 of 19 Saco Street, Unit 1, Center Conway, formerly of Freedom, NH, Fairplay, CO, Ridgewood and Brielle, NJ died February 24, 2010 at the Merriman House in North Conway, NH after a valiant battle against Alzheimer's disease. Born September 14, 1925 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Richard and Marion Jones.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy as an ensign on the U.S.S. Montpelier.

He graduated from Kent School in Kent, CT and went on to Cornell University earning a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree. While at Cornell he was president of his fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

He was married to Doris (Davy) Davidson who died in July of 1989. They had four children. In 1991 he married Mary Wincote and they lived in Fairplay, Colorado prior to moving to New Hampshire.

He was employed as a sales engineer for H.H. Robertson Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He subsequently became vice-president of Chris Andersen Erecting Company of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Following this he was owner/vice president of Bobby Knapp Ski Shop in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Mr. Jones was an honorary lifetime member of Manasquan River Yacht Club in Brielle, New Jersey, and served as Rear Commodore for a period. He won the Tennis Men's Singles Championship of MRYC in 1958, enjoyed tennis at Keystone Resort in CO and Cranmore Fitness Center in NH. Mr. Jones was an active tennis player all of his life.

He sang with the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Singing in America first in Ridgewood, New Jersey chapter and then in The Sound of the Rockies (Denver, CO) chapter. He served as president of the Ridgewood Chapter for two years.

Mr. Jones had a home workshop and enjoyed woodworking making furniture and home improvements.

Mr. Jones was an avid square dancer in the timberline Toppers of Frisco, Colorado and more recently in the Mount Washington Valley Stompers in Conway, New Hampshire.
