Richard “Richie” D. Hansen, age 85 of North Conway NH, died May 11, 2024 following a brief battle with cancer. Richie was born March 10, 1939 in Portland, ME and was the only child of Norman and Lillian (Carr) Hansen. Richie moved to Conway, NH in June 1947 attending Conway Elementary and Kennett High. He was a member of the Year Book Committee, Dramatic Club, Mixed Chorus, and the Thespians. He graduated in 1957. Later, he attended Plymouth Teacher College. Richard’s earliest employment was in high school at the Waffle Shop in North Conway. Here he met many of his friends, some of whom were lifelong. He later worked at the A&P, Abbotts Dairy in Conway for 16 years, followed by Intervale Carpet (later known as Art-Lee Flooring) for 10 years. He then spent 18 years with the Bartlett School District as a School Bus driver before retiring. Richie loved his job as a bus driver and the children and families loved him as well. During summer months from driving he worked at Main St. Auto. Richie was proud to volunteer for the Conway Fire Department for 17 years and another 23 years on the North Conway Fire Dept. He retired as Captain. He was a member of the Elmwood Grange 314 and was a Past Master, White Mt. Pomona Grange, and NH State Grange. He proudly served on the Conway Kennett Alumni Association Board for 30 years, with the last 20 years as President. He was very devoted to the Alumni Association and served as a Grand Marshall at the school’s 100th anniversary. He also loved giving out scholarships every year at the school. After retirement he enjoyed his family and friends, reminiscing about Conway and the earlier days. He always had a project around the house. Mostly he was a friend to many and will be remembered for his stories and the best hugs ever. Richard is survived by his wife, Cathy (Carpenter) Hansen, married 47 years; his son Glenn Hansen of Milford Center, OH; daughters, Julie (Haley) Sewell of Littleton, ME (husband Darren) and Jennifer (Haley) Lain of Intervale, NH; his sister-in-law, Virginia (Carpenter) Smith of Conway, NH; grandchildren, Amanda Robbins of Poland, ME, Malcolm McCollor of Littleton, ME, and Abigail Lain of Intervale, NH; his Niece from ME, and Abigail’s father Michael Lain of Waterford, ME. Richie was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Heidi Hansen; and his first grandson, Alexander Robbins.
