March 13, 1947- January 29th, 2025 Maureen Margaret Chamberlain passed away peacefully on January 29th, 2025 after bravely fighting Parkinson’s Disease for almost thirty years with dignity and grace. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend. Maureen was born in Lawrence, MA to James and Doris Moylan, and spent most of her childhood in Salem, NH. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1964. She attended Keene State College and is a graduate of Lowell University where she earned degrees in education and math. Maureen married Fred Chamberlain in 1966. They moved to Derry, NH and later to Londonderry, NH where they raised their children. Maureen devoted her life to her four children, always encouraging, cheering, and supporting them in their journey to adulthood and beyond. She enriched their lives with her zest for learning, her spirit of adventure, and her appreciation for the outdoors. She taught them the value of education, kindness, and hard work. Maureen was a dedicated teacher with a passion for early childhood education and special education. She returned to school in the late 1990s to pursue a Master’s degree in Special Education and Learning Disabilities from Rivier College. She began her career in Windham, NH teaching elementary school, and then spent several years at Nutfield School in Derry, NH teaching preschool while her children were young. She ended her career at East Derry Memorial School teaching first graders, her favorite age. She was well respected as a primary educator earning Teacher of the Year in 2007. She retired in 2007 after teaching for thirty three years in the classroom. Maureen loved the mountains and was an avid camper, hiker, skier, and kayaker. She and Fred relocated to Bartlett, NH in 2014, where she had access to adventure right out her back door and she was able to enjoy the magic of the Mt. Washington Valley. She loved riding in Fred’s 1955 MG convertible and the two of them would spend summer days or evenings with the top down, cruising around the Valley sightseeing or to play golf or to attend local live music events. She could always convince Fred to stop for ice cream after one of their drives. She enjoyed traveling and she and Fred adventured all over Europe and the U.S. in their retirement. She photo documented all their adventures and made the most beautiful scrap books. Her four grandchildren brought Maureen so much joy! She was instrumental in teaching them all how to read and blessed their lives with books. She was a devout Catholic and her generosity and faith guided her in her retirement toward prolific volunteerism. She was very active in the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA) sharing her experience with the disease to help others. She was president of the NH chapter of the APDA advocating for those with the disability and not once complaining of her own symptoms. She was also involved in the Believe in Books Foundation helping spread literacy across the Mt. Washington Valley. Other organizations she gave her time to included Memorial Hospital in North Conway, the soup kitchen in Derry, and The Pediatric Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Maureen is survived by her husband Fred Chamberlain; her children, Kerin Burke and husband James, Steven Chamberlain, Kristen Sortor and husband Talyon, and David Chamberlain and wife Rachel; her grandchildren, Dr. Katie Burke and husband Liam, James Burke, Jr., Owen Bartholow, and Sarah Chamberlain; her siblings, Sheila Murray, James Moylan, and Kathleen Whittemore; numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends.
