Mary Greenberg Obituary

Closing the book of her life with the same verve and energy through which she lived, Mary Wilkinson Greenberg passed away suddenly at her mountain home on July 10th. Just a week before her 88th birthday, she was never one to slow down due to age or infirmity, and all of those many people who knew her and remember her smile would agree that another shooting star has been born.
Mary was born to Drs. Bert and Mary Gardiner in Toronto, Canada on July 19, 1924, where she lived until the dire effects of the depression pushed them north to the little town of Orillia. It was there that her lifelong love of teaching, and learning, began. At 16 she taught for a year in a one-room country schoolhouse, and then, at 17, she departed for South America to teach school in a Shell Oil Company outpost. Returning to college in Toronto, she met and married Ronald Scott and they moved together to Boston for more adventures and graduate school; she at Boston University. Shortly thereafter they purchased Brad Washburn's cabin high in Pinkham Notch and began a lifelong love affair with skiing and hiking and what would become, her mountains.
She was an early educator in what is now known as Special Education and held many positions in Massachusetts elementary schools before retiring at age 70 to Jackson. Hundreds of students learned to read thanks to her magic, and her liberal use of reading pills (M&Ms) as a reward. She also was a summer camp counselor for many years where she learned to love canoeing.
Bunny was a world traveler and rarely a year would go by without a fantastic trip to some far away land along with an opportunity to learn, returning home with fabulous stories. She was also a devoted supporter of the Boston Symphony and Museum of Fine Arts, along with countless local charities including Mountain Top Music, the MWV Children's Museum, and Fryeburg Academy.
Along the way she married Everett Wilkinson and they lived for a time on the ocean in Rockport, Massachu
