Mark Brown

Mark Edward Brown, 62, of Madison, died peacefully on Dec. 19, 2012, surrounded by family and friends at Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a long battle with cancer. He was born on Dec. 5, 1950 in Augusta, ME, the son of Frederick Perley Brown, Sr. and Clara (Ballard) Brown Mendell.
He graduated from Portland High School in 1970 and then joined the Navy. Stationed in Panama for four years, he served as a radioman until 1976. After his service, Mark traveled extensively across the U.S. and in South America working for a company installing communications towers. In 1984 he moved to the Mt. Washington Valley where he worked as a contractor. While living in the Valley, he volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and served on the Madison Planning Board. He will be remembered for his very kind and generous nature and his willingness to lend a helping hand.
Mark leaves behind his beloved wife Marsha, two stepsons, Jason Smith and his wife Melissa of Colorado, and Eric Smith and his wife Stephanie and grandson Parker of Peabody, MA. He is also survived by his mother, Clara Brown Mendell of Windham, ME, brothers Fred Brown and wife Sylvia of Augusta, ME, Timothy Brown of Windham, ME, Dennis Brown and wife Karen of Portland, ME, and Jeffrey Brown and wife Margaret of Portland, ME, and sisters Diane Reynolds and husband Craig of Cumberland, ME, Suzanne Dube and husband Robert of Windham, ME, Debra Surran and husband John of Saco, ME, and Kimberly Dennis and husband Nate of Portland, ME and 16 nieces and nephews and 23 great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the caring medical staff at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston and at Memorial Hospital in North Conway for the outstanding care and treatment he received during his recent illness.
