John E. Cowles, 79, of Albany NH died September 8, 2012, in his home with his dear friend, Jodie Morrissette, by his side. John had previously fought and beat cancer, and it was in battling it the second time that he had to leave us. Born in New Haven, CT, the son of Raymond and Helen Cowles, John spent most of his life in CT. It has been in the last 30 years that we have grown to love him here in NH.
John had a very strong work ethic and often worked at least two jobs at once. These included The Naval Reserve, Fort Nathan Hale, CT; president of the Connecticut branch of the National Star Route Mail Carrier's Assoc.; Deputy Sheriff of Middlesex and New Haven County, CT; Democratic chairman of Hamden's 7th District, CT. John was an active member of the Interstate Police Officer's Association, as well as the Police Commissioner of the Town of New Hamden, CT, and Vice President of the Police Commissioner's Association of Connecticut.
Since John's retirement from Dattco Bus Company in New Brittain, CT, he had become very well known for his work here at the Green Thumb Farms in Fryeburg, ME; Conway Hotel Operators, Conway, NH; and most recently at the Purity Spring Resort and Camp Tohkomeupog, East Madison, NH, and Carroll County Transit in Berlin NH. He has chauffeured many of you around our community, whether it be by van, bus, double decker bus or Hummer limo. John enjoyed and had an appreciation of the Native American pow wows and culture. He was a familiar face among the local Native Americans and will be sadly missed.
John's family included two sons, William Cowles of East Haven, CT, and Ronald Cowles of Haverhill, MA; two daughters, Deborah Robertson of Meriden, CT, and Holly Berg of Bath, NY; a stepson, Jack Collake of East Haven CT; a stepdaughter, Sandra Overlock of Hamden CT; a brother-in-law, Benedict J. Mikolinski of Madison, CT; 16 grand children and 5 great grandchildren.
John was pre-deceased by his wife, Elizabeth Cowles, his Brother, Ra
