Hilda Shirley Johnston Matero, 98, of North Conway died July 23, 2012 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center in Fryeburg, ME following a long illness. Born in Woodland, ME, the daughter of Archibald and Catherine (Gilfoyle) Shirley, she moved to the Mt. Washington Valley in the mid 1930's.
Mrs. Matero had served as the Librarian in the North Conway Public Library and also in the Jackson Public Library for several years.
She enjoyed square dancing, cross-country skiing and was very involved in genealogy.
The family includes two sons, Alan H. Johnston of Lisbon, ME and Leland H. Johnston and his wife Fe of Center Conway; two daughters, Susan R. Southworth and her companion David of North Conway and Anne S. White of Center Conway; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Emil Matero in 1997, a grandson, Eric White in 1992 and two brothers, Archibald and Ernest Shirley.
A Memorial service will be held Friday July 27, 2012 at 1 p.m. in the Center Conway United Methodist Church with Sue Davidson, pastor, officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to N.H. Public Television in her memory.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
