Edward “Skip” Luis Maura, 79, of Tamworth, NH, passed away on Thursday, August 14th, 2025. Born on March 3, 1946 in the Bronx, Skip was the eldest of five siblings. As a boy, he roamed the city, trick-or-treating on subway cars, sneaking into the Philharmonic, and exploring Harlem and the Bronx. In high school, he played bass drum in the marching band in Hoboken, NJ, but left school just before graduation to enlist in the U.S. Army. After the Army, Skip returned to New York briefly and embraced a hippy lifestyle, playing drums with Richie Havens, hitchhiking across the country, and spending time in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury. Eventually, Skip relocated to New Hampshire, where he had his first daughter, Autumn, in 1980. In New Hampshire, Skip found his true calling working with folks with developmental disabilities. It was through his work that he met his wife, Teresa Maura (Smith), and her two daughters, Jessica and Melissa. Skip, Teresa, and their three daughters moved into a house in Tamworth in the late 80s. They married on August 25, 1990 and had their youngest daughter, Carmen, in 1996. Together, they dedicated 40 years to providing housing and day services to dozens of adults with developmental disabilities and employed countless individuals, many of whom are still like family to us today. In 2007, Skip’s first grandchild, Kierra, was born. Her early years were spent gardening with grandpa, going to Old Orchard Beach, and playing music with him. Over the years, Melissa and her husband, Troy Emerson, gave him three more grandchildren: Lucas, Camille, and Ethan. He loved them all dearly and delighted in watching them grow with the same curiosity, humor, and zest he carried through life. Skip is predeceased by his wife, Teresa Maura; his parents, Eduardo Maura and Violet Melbourne (Maloney); his brothers, Kenny Maura, Ralph Maura (Susan Williams), David Maura, and Travis Smith; his father-in-law Ted Smith; his nephew, Henry “Bubba” Flanders; as well as friends, Arthur, Lucy, Jimmy, Dwight and Mikey. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law; his grandchildren; his sister Suzanne Maura; his mother-in-law Nancy Smith and Uncle Bob; his friends, MaryLou, Clinton, Debby, Rebekkah, Heather, Leigh, Ryan, and Lexi; and countless folks around the valley, the country, and the world who he met briefly but loved eternally. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 14th at 12 PM at the Conway Village Cemetery. All are welcome and encouraged to bring their wildest Skip stories. No need to dress in black—wear what makes you comfortable and reminds you of Skip. Flowers will be arranged by Ruthie’s Flower Shop and funeral arrangements will be made through Furber.
