W. Dwight Ellis, 92, of Madison died May 31, 2012 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway. He was born February 19, 1920 in Needham Ma., the son of Warren and Rachel Ellis, who were longtime residents of Westwood, Needham and Martha's Vineyard, Ma.
He graduated from Needham High School in 1938 and attended Mass College of Art. Enlisting in the U. S. Coast Guard in 1941, he served until his discharge in 1946. April of 1944 he married Marguerite Gately, also of Needham, Ma. After his discharge he worked in the printing and advertising industries as a printer, compositor and graphic artist for his entire career. Dwight loved all kinds of music but Barbershop harmony was his favorite. He was active in the Needham Barbershop Chorus as a singer, coach and competition judge for more than 20 years. In 1985 Dwight and Marguerite built a home and retired to Madison, NH, where they were active in the Democratic Party. A fine craftsman, he created many woodworking projects for the Madison Conservation Commission, the Town of Madison, the Madison Elementary Schools, the Madison Library and Garden Club. A lifelong sports fan, he particularly liked baseball and followed the Braves for 70 years.
He is survived by his sister Mrs. Barbara Lawton; son Peter and wife Paula; daughter Susan and husband Thomas Connolly; sons Jack and wife Carolyn; Russell and wife Sandra; W. Andrew and wife Helena. Grandchildren include Peter R, Bruce, Brian, Brendan, Katie, Jamie, Stephanie, Athena, Meegan, Mitchell and Gabrielle, in addition to 4 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his loving wife Marguerite, granddaughter Bethany and sister Sandra LaVita.
Visiting hours will be at the Furber and White Funeral Home, in North Conway, on Monday, June 4, 2012 from 100 to 400 pm and 600 to 800 pm with interment at the Madison Cemetery on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 2 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Merriman House in North Conway.
