David J. Seddon March 8, 1939 - May 12, 2025 (age 86) “It ain’t over till it’s over.” – Yogi Berra David (Dave) James Seddon, age 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 12, 2025 at his home in South Conway, NH. Born on March 8, 1939, David is survived by his brother Robert, his son’s family David, Hollye, Audrey, and Macuillian, his daughter’s family Alison, Tim, Caitlin, and Brianna, and many relatives and great friends who were dear to him. He is preceded in death by his father Oliver, his mother Frances, his wife Judith (Judy), and his sister Nancy. In 1961, David graduated from Colby College in Waterville, ME where he majored in History, was a brother of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and met his future wife Judy. At Colby, David was a goalie on the hockey team for two seasons and a catcher on the baseball team where he was named All-New England Catcher of the Year. In 1960, he had the 7th highest batting average among all college players in the nation. During his college years, David played minor league baseball for one season with the Yankee Rookies and two seasons with the Red Sox. After graduating from Colby, David served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Sill, OK. Upon completing his military service, David became a dedicated teacher at Cresskill and then Hackensack High Schools in New Jersey. David was an Army veteran and teacher who believed “The best education is not given to students; it is drawn out of them.” David knew how to reach high school students in ways that helped them grow into adulthood, as is evidenced by the numerous former students who became his lifelong friends, many of whom continued to communicate with him up to his death. David was inducted into the Hackensack High School Teacher’s Wall of Fame. An avid sports enthusiast, David also inspired students through sports. He was the head coach for Hackensack High School’s baseball team for 20 years and was inducted into the New Jersey Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. David coached his son’s youth soccer team and was a soccer referee. David believed in second chances, helping others whenever he could, and that being a Red Sox fan was a far more noble, albeit more painful, calling than being a Yankees fan. Upon retirement in 1996, David and Judy moved to their beloved home in South Conway, NH where David umpired baseball games in the Cal Ripken league. Family and friends will fondly remember David’s green thumb maintaining his bountiful vegetable garden, his love of travel, Yoda, tennis, cross-country skiing, and his beloved dogs Lucy, Theo, Boo, and Lillah. David will be fondly remembered for his favorite quote, “There’s no crying in baseball,” from A League of Their Own. Our family thanks Alison, Sonia, and the staff of Timberland Home Care; Lisa, Rachel, nurses, and staff at Visiting Nurse Home Care & Hospice of Carroll County and Western Maine who cared for David after knee replacement surgeries and hospice care; and Dr. Rabideau, Dr. Lieber, Dr. Goldenhar, Cherisse, Leona, Thomas, Kathy and Haze, and the many doctors, nurses, and staff at Memorial Hospital who kept David healthy. Arrangements were made through Furber Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Per David’s wish, a life celebration honoring Judy and David Seddon will be held at the Conway Public Library on May 24, 2025 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Conway Lake Conservation Association https://www.conwaylake.org/members. A memorial scholarship fund will be established in David’s name to help support rising youth baseball players in Conway to begin their baseball journey. If you are interested in donating, please send an email to seddonmemorialscholarship@gmail.com so we may contact you in the future with instructions for donating.
