Carlyle Hounsell Obituary

Carlyle Warren Hounsell, 86, of Conway, died at the home of his daughter in New Gloucester, Maine, on October 29, 2009. Son of William B. and Hazel T. Hounsell, he was born on April 28th, 1923 in Portland Maine.

Carlyle, often called "Berk", was a graduate of Colebrook Academy in Colebrook, N.H. He attended Duke University where he played baseball and basketball. The Brooklyn Dodgers invited him for tryouts; instead he opted to serve for over three years in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

Carlyle worked as a lineman for Public Service Company of New Hampshire for several years, ran a gas station in Conway, and also taught school in Andover, N.H. He was employed by a number of utility line construction companies, notably Seaward Construction Co. before becoming a lineman and working foreman for the N.H. Electric Cooperative in Bartlett. He retired in 1987, after 20 years on that job. He was a member of the North Star Chapter, Masonic Lodge for over half a century.

He was married to Janet Ella McAllister Hounsell for 63 years at the time of her passing, on September 3, 2009.

Carlyle is survived by his daughter, Carla Marie McAllister of New Gloucester, ME., his son, Ted C. Hounsell and daughter-in-law Janice Locklin Hounsell of Conway, beloved granddaughter Samantha Linnell Hounsell of Conway, step-granddaughters, Shawne Smith Bremges of Foster, R.I.. and Tracy Smith of Portland, ME., and by a dear devoted friend from the beginning to the very end, Robert Hatch of Conway.

Also surviving are brothers, William B. (Ted) Hounsell, of Conway, and Frank B. Hounsell of Ellington CT., as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Blanche Hounsell Mahar Chase, of Bow, N.H.

There will be no calling hours or services. There will be a celebration of life for both Carlyle and Janet at a later date.
