Benjamin R. Greene

"Benjamin Russell Greene died on Dec 1st, at the age of 90. He was born on August 8th, 1935 at Memorial Hospital in North Conway and graduated from Newton High School in MA in 1952, spending his childhood summers at Overlook cottage in Jackson, NH. After nearly three years at Brown University, Ben left Rhode Island for self discovery - hiking the White Mountains, building houses in Barnstable, sailing in Rhode Island, and crisscrossing the country. Ben was drafted in February of 1958 and spent nearly all his service at Fort Dix, NJ, becoming a specialist in clerking and punched cards. In 1963 Ben earned a mathematics degree from M.I.T. working on early computers, using his punched card knowledge to repair and reengineer machines. He continued studies with a master’s degree in meteorology at Northeastern, living and socializing in Cambridge and Wellesley. Ben married Orian Hays Hallor in December of 1966 (divorced 1988) and helped raise their children, Anna and Edward (Ned) in Acton, MA, while he worked as an air quality scientist with Environmental Research & Technology out of Hanscom Air Field in Concord, MA. Ben married Janice W. Frey in January of 1990, living in Concord, but divorced and moved to Jackson, NH in 1993. Ben was happiest singing and being in Jackson, where he lived year round from 1993 till 2020. A philosopher and punster, Ben’s curiosity rarely dwindled and his wit never dulled. Ben loved festive dinners with friends and family, ideally with songs and music. A memorial will be planned for late April or May."
