Arthur F. Brown Jr. died June 8, 2010 at Memorial Hospital. Born in Dover, NH in 1918 to Arthur and Marion Brown, he graduated from Portsmouth High School and Portsmouth Business School then went to work for New Hampshire National Bank for 24 years before accepting the position of president and chairman of the Board of Carroll County Trust Company in 1962.
Arthur served in the US Army for five years during WWII and reached the rank of Sergeant Major seeing duty in Australia, New Guinea and Dutch East Indies.
He was married for 54 years to Ruth Hersey who predeceased him in 2002. He was also predeceased by an infant son, Edward. He is survived by four daughters Janet Dugger (husband, Tom) of Brevard, NC, Marion Pevarnek (husband, Al) of Scarborough, ME, Joyce Walch of Worcester, MA and Nancy Brown (Partner Mike Mooney) of Augusta, ME, eight grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a niece, Judith Hampe (husband Richard) of Concord, NH.
Arthur "Banker Brown" was very active in community affairs. He was a charter member of the Conway Business Development Corp., president of Conway Village Chamber of Commerce, moderator of Conway School District and Conway Village Fire District. He served as president of Memorial Hospital during the building expansion in the 1970's and served in many capacities as a member of the Conway Village Congregational Church.
He served as president of the New Hampshire Banker's Association, was an advisory director of the Small Business Administration and served as president of the Federal Reserve Stockholder's Advisory Committee.
In 1978 the Browns purchased the Majestic Theater block and spent many hours refurbishing the theater which they opened in 1979. Upon his retirement from banking in 1982 he worked with Ruth at the Conway Singer Sewing Center .
