Alton Burnell Obituary

On June 15, 2025, Alton “Burnie” Burnell, age 79, of Albany, NH passed peacefully at Memorial Hospital after a long battle with COPD. That afternoon he settled in with his family to watch his beloved Red Sox. As the Sox were up in the 5th, he quietly took his last breath. Burnie was born on August 16, 1945, in Portland, ME. He was the son of the late Norman and Arline Burnell. Surviving him are his wife Laurie of Albany, sister Donna (Richard) Webster of Parsonsfield, ME; son Michael (Julie) of Springfield, MO; daughter Andrea Ela (Michael Clemons) of Conway, NH; daughter Kristi Burnell of Conway, NH; mother-in-law Mildred Streeter of Tamworth, NH; brothers and sisters-in-law Joel Streeter, Gail Dascoulias, Mark Streeter, Janet Conner and their families of Tamworth, NH. He was a proud grandfather to Cote Burnell and Cera Salazar of Salt Lake City, UT; Joseph Smith of Center Conway, NH; Dylan and Jared Burnell of Springfield, MO; Broughton Shackford of Center Conway, NH; Gabbi Shackford of Intervale, NH; and Zoe Burnell of Conway, NH. He was also proud of his nine great-grandchildren. He was a 1964 graduate of Porter High School. He joined the Navy and worked aboard the USS Yancey from 1964 through 1966. He worked at the Kezar Falls Milling Co. from 1966-1967; as a lineman at Seaward Construction Co. in Kittery, ME from 1967 to 1973; was a special officer in the Conway Police Department in the mid to late 70s; and worked as a lineman and operations supervisor at New Hampshire Electric Coop. from September of 1973 through April of 2005 when he retired. No doubt he is already catching up with his buddies Scrubby and Doug. The three amigos are together again. We will deeply miss his great stories (told most recently with Remi the kitty snuggled in his lap), that unmistakable deep chuckle, big smile, and the sparkle in his eye. He loved fishing at camp in Holeb, hunting with the guys in Tamworth and Pennsylvania, trips to the casino with David, and watching the Red Sox. The family would like to extend special thanks to the many staff at Memorial Hospital who knew and took great care of him, and Visiting Nurse Home Care & Hospice of North Conway. Arrangements were made through Furber Funeral Home and Cremation Services. At his request, there will be no services, but a celebration of life will be held at a later date, details to be determined.
